Cognitive Coaching
Cognitive coaching focuses on interpersonal relationships and the questioning and listening techniques that are important to the coach and mentor.
It is one of the most widely used used forms of coaching in American schools today (Knight, 2007).
It involves four support functions: Cognitive Coaching, Collaborating, Consulting and Evaluating (Costa & Garmston, 2012).
The Four Propositions for Cognitive Coaching (Costa & Garmston, 2012) are:
All behavior is produced by thought and perception.
Teaching is constant decision-making.
To learn something new requires engagement and alteration in thought.
Humans continue to grow cognitively.
The mission of Cognitive Coaching is to produce self-directed persons with the cognitive capacity for excellence both independently and as a member of a community (Costa & Garmston, 2012).
Cognitive coaching focuses on five states of mind: consciousness, craftsmanship, efficacy, flexibility and interdependence (Costa & Garmston, 2012).
